Abstract

The objective of Open Sampl3 is to design an auto sampling machine that meets the requirements of our client, Dr. Jing Pan, who is representative of an overlooked market of researchers in need of an innovative solution to their common auto sampling problems. Open Sampl3 aims to design a low-cost machine, able to compete with its highly priced competitors in terms of high speed and accuracy. The price ceilings for the production and prototype are $5,000 and $3,000, respectively. The user interface should be easy to use, as to minimize user error, and should allow the user to monitor task progress. The machine should also contain a cleaning system to ensure purity of samples. Additionally, as the name Open Sampl3 implies, the machine should widely be open source, meaning that the simplicity of the design should allow for user modifications, without worrying about OTS being compatible. This would also extend to the software, allowing the user access to all levels and versions of the software, without unnecessary additional purchases. This allows the user to customize the system to meet specific experimental needs. Key features of the Open Sampl3 autosampler include the hinging case which allows the user easy access to the samples while still ensuring their protection, a tray compatible with multiple of the most common sample analysis racks, and an emergency stop feature which will allow for an immediate shut down of the machine and any on-going processes. The device will also offer users the ability to directly control and monitor the temperature of the samples through the user interface, which is available through a screen on the front of the machine housing. The OPENSAMPL3R is the low-cost, innovative solution to the unique needs of smaller laboratories and researchers.
