Abstract
The objective of this design project was to develop an interactive and educational exhibit which would properly showcase the complexity and uniqueness of the Astro Payload. Research done on existing space-related exhibits depicted a gap in the market: the combination of both interactivity and accessibility parameters. Therefore, goals for this design centered around these needs along with a set of other requirements, including: considering safety, eliminating payload motion, keeping low maintenance, and providing valuable education. The final design for the exhibit meets these needs through the use of the following components: a turntable stand with an actuatable small-scale model of the payload, digital kiosks for a programmed interactive learning experience, a projector to display relevant footage and data, and spotlights which will highlight each of the respective telescopes on the full-scale payload. The interactive components come in the form of kiosks and the scaled model turntable. With the kiosks, museum visitors will see a digital presentation to learn about the history of the Astro missions and the relevant engineering behind features (telescopes, laser targeting system, ultraviolet radiation) of the payload, along with a trivia game to test their knowledge. Multiple languages will be offered on the kiosks, and a speaker will sound out written information for the visually impaired. Individual telescope descriptions on the kiosks will be met with colored LED lighting on the full-scale payload so that visitors may visualize what they are learning about. The scaled model turntable will give visitors an interactive model with which they can view the payload from multiple angles and actuate the model from a retracted to deployed position. Lastly, a projector will enhance the experience by showcasing pictures obtained by the telescopes and relevant historical footage related to the missions.
