Abstract
RollTech Innovations was invited to collaborate with the University of Florida to design a mobility device that has a mechanical drive system, rain protection, and a reclinable seat. This project addresses the need to design a more durable and mechanically advantageous wheelchair equipped with weather protection for users in the athletic or sports industry. The resulting wheelchair design incorporates a lever that, when pushed, enables the user to propel themselves forward with ease. Attached to the wheelchair’s backrest, the rain cover takes the form of a canopy that folds and retracts easily, providing full protection from head to toe. The design implements a long backrest and seat. This structure offers proper lumbar, head, and neck support while allowing the seat to recline for enhanced comfort. To maintain stability in various reclining positions, a configuration of three wheels was deemed ideal. The third wheel placed behind the backrest allows for better support and distribution of weight when reclined. Ultimately the project’s focus was to improve the current wheelchair design focusing on creating devices capable of reclining to any angle, protecting the user from the rain, and providing overall comfortability.
