Abstract

Our team was tasked with designing a shaker table that prioritizes an integrated optical density and fluorescent intensity (OD/FI) measurement system, and a user-interface that allows for variable shaker patterns, speed, and radius values. In doing so, Counter Culture Bio created a design philosophy that prioritizes three core values: higher accessibility for micro bio technologies, a modular and easily serviceable design, and successful integration of OD/FI and Core XY systems. Our first core value is to make micro-bio technologies more accessible, which is accomplished by integrating a simple user-interface system that can control all desired functions with three knobs; making the device simple to operate. OD/FI integration reduces the number of tools needed for operation and allows for complex testing in reduced time periods. This relates to our second core value, which is achieved through incorporating a modular design that increases system life and reduces costs. Additionally, use of 3D-printed parts also reduces costs of the shaker table. Our final core value is the successful integration of OD/FI and Core XY systems. The OD/FI system tests over 20 optical densities and 10 fluorescent intensities, while the Core XY drive mechanism provides smooth motion in linear, orbital, and double orbital patterns with variable radii and speeds up to 25 mm and 350 rpms, respectively; we feel confident that our design is the best on the market.
