The Payload Display Stand (PDS) is fueled by AstroBuilds’s passion for space exploration in conjunction with the team’s aspirations in engineering design, culminating in the form of a simple, robust, and aesthetically pleasing Payload Display Stand capable of providing an interactive educational experience that is both substantial and beneficial to a wide age range of audiences. The one-fifth scale payload was 3D printed and decorated in a way to most accurately represent the full-scale payload that was flown in 1980s space missions. The most unique feature of the PDS is its intuitive control panel, granting exhibit viewers the opportunity to manipulate the display with total control of tilt and rotation of the payload. A gear-and-motor system is incorporated into the bottom of the stand, utilizing four castor wheels placed along a circular track allowing for a full 360° rotation of the payload display based upon a user’s input at the control panel. Linear actuators placed alongside the trunnion beams allow for the tilting of the payload, and an additional locking mechanism allows for the payload to be locked in place at fifteen-degree increments from 0° (horizontal) to 90° (vertical) for various display purposes. Without a doubt, the AstroBuilds team has poured their heart and soul into combining their adoration for space exploration and their expertise with engineering design to create a unique display stand that welcomes viewers of all ages.
