Abstract
During the Spring 2023 semester, this team of senior Aerospace Engineering majors designed, manufactured, and flew an RC aircraft with the goal of achieving liftoff without assistance, circling a track, and landing with minimal damage. With a wingspan of 63 inches and a total weight of 7.8 lbs, the Phoenix was the final iteration of months of challenging work. All parts of the plane were originally designed in Solidworks and fabricated using 3D printers on campus in lightweight PLA. A NACA2412 airfoil was used to provide substantial lift at relatively low speeds, and the design was simulated in XFLR5 to ensure static and dynamic stability. Throughout the design process, structural integrity and aerodynamic stability was prioritized and consistently assessed with every new addition to the aircraft.
